If you close your eyes and imagine Christmas — snowy forests, glowing lights, warm smiles, the soft crunch of snow under your feet — this is exactly what Rovaniemi feels like in winter.
Santa Claus Village is not just a tourist attraction. It’s a feeling. A tradition. A place that warms your heart even at –25°C.
People often say:
“It feels like stepping into a Christmas movie.”
And honestly — it does.

The story is surprisingly sweet. In 1927, a Finnish radio host “discovered” that Santa actually lives in Lapland. Then in 1950, Eleanor Roosevelt visited Rovaniemi, and a little cabin was built for her — right on the Arctic Circle line. That simple cabin became a symbol, then a village, then a dream that grew into a global tradition.
Today, Santa lives here all year round, the elves run the cheerful little post office, the Arctic Circle cuts right through the village, millions of letters arrive every winter, and thousands of people come to Lapland to feel the magic.
From Rovaniemi city centre:
If you walk around locally, the village feels like a cozy little town inside a snowy forest. Everything is easy to find.
